This winter, I’ll be running a fun skijoring program at Devil’s Thumb Ranch! You’ll get all the guidance you need to build trust with your dog, work as a team and experience the pure thrill of gliding across the snow together, plus the winter scenery is absolutely incredible.
What is Skijoring?
Skijoring is a winter sport where you hop on your cross-country skis and your dog pulls you with a special harness and towline. No screens, no noise, no distractions, just you and your dog cruising through the snow together.
Skijoring is one of those activities that reminds us what dogs were designed for: movement, partnership and communication beyond words. But wait, it’s not an easy sport to master and that’s exactly why learning it with the right guidance makes all the difference.
Skijoring at Devil’s Thumb Ranch
One of the places I love teaching skijoring is Devil’s Thumb Ranch. The trails, the space, and the quiet of the mountains create the perfect environment to slow things down and let learning happen.
Here, dogs can work without being overwhelmed. Handlers can breathe. The connection becomes the focus (not the outcome).

Is Skijoring Right for Your Dog?
Not every dog needs to be a “sled dog” to enjoy skijoring.
What matters most is:
-
Your dog is physically healthy and mature
-
They enjoy movement and being outdoors
-
They can work through excitement without losing focus
-
You respect their limits and energy levels
Skijoring isn’t about pushing dogs beyond what they can do.
I teach skijoring with one rule above all:
Dogs Come First (Always)
That means:
-
No pushing past physical or emotional limits.
-
Proper harness fit and equipment.
-
Gradual conditioning, not forced endurance.
-
Listening when your dog says “enough”.
Skijoring should leave dogs feeling confident, fulfilled, and safe.
